PU Pre-Insulated Aluminum Duct Board

PU (Polyurethane) pre-insulated aluminum duct board is a rigid composite panel used for HVAC air distribution systems. It integrates the structural duct and thermal insulation into a single material, replacing traditional "galvanized steel duct + separate external insulation."

What Is It?

The PU duct board consists of a rigid polyurethane (PU) foam core sandwiched between two layers of corrosion-resistant aluminum foil. This "sandwich" structure combines the strength of metal with the superior thermal performance of high-density insulation foam.

Why "Pre-insulated"?

The term pre-insulated means the thermal insulation is factory-bonded to the structural layer before the duct is even fabricated. In contrast, traditional systems use:

Uninsulated metal ducts → insulation field-applied as a separate layer (fiberglass wrap, foam sheets, etc.)

Risk – If field insulation is poorly installed, damaged, or gets wet, thermal performance degrades quickly.

With a pre-insulated system, the insulation is protected, consistent, and always present - no skipped areas, no compression gaps, no moisture wicking into fibrous materials.

Advantages of PU Pre-Insulated Aluminum Duct Board vs. Traditional Duct Systems

Feature PU Pre-insulated Ductboard Traditional G.I. Duct + Insulation
Weight Extremely light (approx. 1.3–2.5 kg/m²) Heavy (approx. 8–12 kg/m²)
Insulation Built-in (factory-bonded) Separate, field-applied
Thermal bridging None Common (at hangers, supports, flanges)
Installation speed Fast (cut, fold, seal) Slow (cut, bend, rivet, weld, then wrap)
Tools required Hand knife, groover, tape Shears, folder, riveter, hammer, insulation tools
On-site labor skill Low to medium High
On-site waste Minimal (board offcuts) High (metal scraps + insulation offcuts + adhesive waste)
Risk of insulation damage Very low (insulation is protected) High (tears, compression, moisture absorption)
Condensation risk Very low (continuous insulation layer) Moderate to high (gaps or damaged insulation)
Acoustic performance Excellent (PU foam absorbs vibration and noise) Poor (metal transmits noise; insulation only reduces it partially)
Corrosion resistance High (aluminum facings resist moisture and chemicals) Moderate (G.I. coating can be scratched; edges vulnerable)
Indoor air quality Good (smooth aluminum surface resists dust, mold, bacteria) Moderate (insulation fibers can be exposed; dust accumulates on metal)
Fire safety Compliant (flame-retardant PU with aluminum facings) Metal is non-combustible, but insulation may be combustible or emit smoke
Total installed cost Lower Higher

Detailed Explanation of Key Advantages

1. Weight Reduction (Up to 80% Lighter)

G.I. duct: Heavy metal requires multiple installers, cranes, or lifts.

PU ductboard: One person can easily carry and install large sections. Reduces structural load on the building.

2. No Thermal Bridging

G.I. duct: Metal hangers and flanges penetrate the insulation layer, creating direct paths for heat to escape.

PU ductboard: Continuous insulation throughout - no metal-to-metal contact from inside to outside.

3. Faster Installation (Often 50% less time)

G.I. duct process:

Measure → cut metal → bend/fold → rivet/weld → seal joints → then apply insulation (adhesive, pins, tape, wrap)

PU ductboard process:

Cut board → groove → fold → tape joints → install → done

4. Lower Installed Cost

Although the material cost per square meter of PU ductboard may be similar to or slightly higher than bare G.I. sheet, the total installed cost is lower because:

Less labor time

No separate insulation material purchase

No insulation labor

Lighter weight → lower transport and rigging costs

5. Better Resistance to Moisture and Mold

G.I. duct + fiberglass wrap: If the outer wrap is damaged or gets wet, fiberglass retains moisture, leading to mold growth, insulation sagging, and performance loss.

PU ductboard: Closed-cell PU foam does not absorb water. Aluminum facings are non-porous and easily wiped clean.

6. Quieter Operation

G.I. duct: Metal panels "drum" or transmit fan and airflow noise. Insulation helps but does not eliminate structure-borne noise.

PU ductboard: The PU foam core inherently dampens vibration and absorbs sound energy.
