Product Structure and Technical Parameters of AC Duct Foam Board

AC Duct Foam Board (Air Conditioning Duct Foam Board) is a pre-insulated composite duct board. It is composed of a hard foam insulation core material in the middle and aluminum foil or other metal finishes on both sides.
The typical structure of AC Duct Foam Board is a sandwich composite structure of "aluminum foil + foam core material + aluminum foil". The density of the foam core material is usually between 40-50 kg/m³, and the thickness specifications range from 10mm to 40mm. The common specifications are 20mm, 25mm, 30mm,and 40mm. The standard board sizes are mostly 3950×1200mm or 2900/2950×1200mm.
In terms of thermal performance, the thermal conductivity of these products can be as low as 0.019-0.022 W/m·k, far superior to traditional glass wool and other insulation materials. They can achieve excellent insulation effects with extremely thin thicknesses. For example, the thermal resistance of phenolic foam board can reach 0.86 m²K/W. The aluminum foil finish not only enhances the structural strength but also effectively reflects radiant heat, further improving the insulation efficiency.

The closed-cell foam structure combined with aluminum foil finish makes AC Duct Foam Board have an extremely low thermal conductivity. This means that under the same insulation requirements, the thickness of the insulation layer needed for the foam board is much less than that of traditional duct systems, effectively reducing the heat loss of the air conditioning system and significantly lowering operating energy consumption. Some high-end products have an R-value of over R-7, maintaining stable insulation performance even in extreme climate conditions.

For example, phenolic foam board has a density of only 40-60 kg/m³, much lower than that of metal materials. Due to the excellent insulation performance of the foam board itself, no additional insulation layer thickness is required, effectively saving the space of the building ceiling.

1. Fire safety performance
Different types of foam boards have varying fire resistance properties, but the overall performance is excellent. Phenolic foam boards stand out in terms of fire resistance, reaching the A2 fire rating and meeting the BS 476 Part 6&7 Class 0 standard. Even when exposed to open flames, phenolic foam only produces extremely low smoke and does not release toxic gases. PU and PIR boards also have good flame retardant properties.
2. Moisture resistance and condensation prevention
The closed-cell foam structure gives the board an extremely low water absorption rate - the water absorption rate of phenolic board can be as low as 0.25%-0.60%, while that of PU board is approximately 0.36%. The aluminum foil finish itself is also an excellent moisture-proof and vapor barrier layer. Together, they can effectively prevent condensation on the surface of the duct, avoiding the occurrence of mold growth and structural corrosion.
Installation and cost-effectiveness of AC Duct Foam Board
The installation process of AC Duct Foam Board is extremely simplified: through standard procedures such as cutting, gluing, folding, applying tape, flange connection, and sealing, the duct can be made. The entire system is installed in one go, without the need to first make metal ducts and then cover with insulation layers as in traditional ducts. This "one-time molding" installation method significantly shortens the construction period and saves labor costs.
From the perspective of the total life cycle cost, although the initial material price of pre-insulated foam board may be higher than that of ordinary metal ducts, its integrated design of duct structure and insulation layer, lower transportation and installation costs, and long-term energy-saving benefits make the overall ownership cost more competitive. At the same time, these products usually do not contain CFC and HCFC, meeting environmental protection requirements.
