PIR pre-insulated ducting is a high-performance system used in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) to distribute air efficiently. Its core is a rigid foam insulation made of Polyisocyanurate (PIR), which is sandwiched between protective facings, typically aluminum foil or steel. This "all-in-one" design is a key differentiator from traditional systems.

PIR ducting is considered a technological upgrade over conventional materials like glass wool or galvanized steel, offering several key benefits.

Superior Thermal Insulation:

PIR foam has a very low thermal conductivity, about 0.022W/m·K. This is roughly half that of glass wool, meaning it provides nearly double the insulation performance for the same thickness. This translates directly to significant energy savings and lower cooling/heating loss.

Enhanced Fire Safety:

The foam is formulated to achieve a B1 fire rating (according to GB 8624-2006 standard). Importantly, high-quality PIR does not release toxic black smoke when exposed to fire, which is a critical safety factor for building evacuation.

Built-in Moisture Resistance:

Unlike glass wool, which has an open-fiber structure that can absorb water, PIR has a closed-cell structure. Its water absorption rate is exceptionally low (≤0.1% to 0.36%), which prevents mold growth, maintains long-term insulation performance, and protects the duct from corrosion.

Fast and Simple Installation:

The system is an integrated panel (duct + insulation + vapor barrier). This eliminates the separate, time-consuming steps of wrapping insulation and sealing it. It is also 35-50% lighter than traditional systems, making it faster to handle and install, often reducing installation time by two to three times.

Hygienic and Durable:

The smooth surfaces (often aluminum) are fiber-free, easy to clean, and inhibit microbial growth. This helps maintain high indoor air quality, making it suitable for hospitals, labs, and food factories. The system is also durable, with a stable service life estimated at 20 years or more.

Excellent Air-Tightness:

The panels are fabricated with features like V-grooves and interlocking joints, resulting in a much tighter system with up to 40% lower air leakage than traditional field-assembled ducts, further boosting energy efficiency.

PIR pre-insulated Panels:

This is the fundamental building block, a sandwich structure with three layers.

Inner Layer: Typically a smooth, food-grade aluminum foil that provides a clean, airtight surface. This reduces air friction for efficient airflow and is safe for air handling.

Core Layer: The high-density Polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam provides the primary insulation and structural strength. It has excellent thermal properties (e.g., a thermal conductivity as low as 0.022 W/m·K) and a high fire resistance rating (like Class 0 or B1).

Outer Layer: A protective facing (often aluminum foil or a thicker metal sheet) that shields the core from physical damage, moisture, and corrosion . For outdoor applications, a thicker aluminum sheet or pre-painted galvanized steel is often used for enhanced durability.

Tools for pre-insulated Duct Fabrication

Fabricating the duct panels into the desired shape requires specific tools, which can range from manual to automated.

Cutting Tools: Manual cutters or advanced CNC Router Machines are used to accurately cut and score the panels.

Bending Machines: Manual or state-of-the-art bending machines help fold the scored panels precisely to form rectangular duct sections.
