Why Choose PI Foam

PU Foam Duct

Thermal insulation and low smoke, low toxicity: In terms of fire safety, PI foam possesses inherent flame-retardant properties. Its limit oxygen index (LOI) is typically above 34%, far exceeding the standards of most flame-retardant materials.

Excellent acoustic and thermal insulation performance: The PI foam has an open-cell structure with an open-cell rate of up to 99%. This gives it outstanding sound absorption properties, with a noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of up to 0.54 (in the 125-4000Hz range), effectively reducing air flow noise and equipment operation noise in HVAC systems. Additionally, its thermal conductivity is less than 0.022 W/(m·K), providing reliable insulation and heat preservation in a lightweight condition.

Extremely low gas release and chemical stability: In a vacuum environment, the molecules released by the material may contaminate precision instruments. Due to its extremely low gas release property, PI foam is widely used in aerospace and semiconductor cleanroom environments. At the same time, it is resistant to corrosion by weak acids, alkalis, and common oils (such as 93# gasoline), demonstrating excellent chemical stability.

Industrial Perspective and Application of PI Foam Ductwork

From the perspective of industrial application, PI foam ducts are not a single product but a solution that is classified based on requirements. In the commercial market, typical brands such as SOLIMIDE foam clearly delineate application levels:

Aerospace grade (such as AC-550/AC-530): Focused on aircraft fuselage and air conditioning ducts, meeting the most stringent airworthiness standards.
Ship/Industrial Grade (e.g. TA-301): Used for ventilation ducts of naval vessels and HVAC systems of rail vehicles, meeting military standards such as MIL-DTL-24688.
High-temperature grade (such as HT-340): Suitable for high-temperature pipelines, ovens, etc. in scenarios with temperatures up to 300℃.

This classification strategy demonstrates that the value of PI foam ducts lies in their ability to precisely match the safety and performance standards of different industries through the selection of materials.

Limitation Analysis of PI Foam Ductwork

Despite its outstanding performance, the PI foam duct also faces some practical challenges that limit its widespread application:

Cost barrier: The synthesis process of PI monomers is complex, resulting in their raw material costs being much higher than those of PIR, phenolic, or melamine foams. This makes them uncompetitive in the cost-sensitive general commercial building HVAC market.
Competitive material pressure: Under non-extreme conditions, melamine foam performs well in sound absorption and fire resistance with lower costs; high-performance PIR foam has advantages in insulation efficiency (thermal conductivity can be as low as 0.018-0.022 W/mK) and cost. The unique value of PIF foam can only be fully demonstrated in scenarios where it is "unreplaceable".

In conclusion, the PI foam duct is a high-end product with the core value of supreme safety and environmental adaptability. Its decision-making logic does not lie in cost considerations, but rather in the rigid demands for extreme temperatures, strict fire protection, low gas release, etc.
