PI FOAM DUCT SHEET

System Cost Perspective of PI FOAM DUCT SHEET

PID Duct Panel

The hidden benefits of installation efficiency: The extremely low density of PI foam panels (typical value 1.3-1.4 kg/m³) results in their weight being only a fraction of that of traditional metal ducts and external insulation systems. This means that in high-rise buildings or large factories, the structural load design grade can be significantly reduced, the lifting and support systems can be simplified, and the saved steel and labor costs often offset the material premium.

Long-term reduction of energy consumption through dimensionality reduction: The PI foam can maintain an extremely low thermal conductivity (≤ 0.022 W/mK at room temperature) over a wide temperature range (-200°C to above +200°C), and its performance degrades very slowly. Traditional insulation materials (such as glass wool) will have their thermal conductivity soar after getting wet, while the hydrophobicity and closed-cell ratio of PI ensure the long-term stability of its thermal performance in humid and hot environments. When the energy loss over 20 years of operation is factored into the initial cost, the PI solution has a significant advantage in terms of life cycle economics.

Extreme Safety of PI FOAM DUCT SHEET

In the field of fire safety, conventional standards only focus on the speed of flame spread. PI foam offers a more comprehensive solution for "heat un-controlable".
Ultra-low smoke and toxicity: In fires in enclosed spaces (such as subways, hospitals, and submarines), the toxicity of smoke is often the leading cause of death. PI foam emits extremely low smoke during combustion (smoke density < 5), and no toxic gases are released. The lethal gases such as HCN and HCl released by traditional rubber or polyurethane materials during combustion are fundamentally suppressed in PI.

Formation of self-healing barrier layer: Unlike ordinary flame-retardant materials that add halogen-based flame retardants, the PI foam forms a dense carbonized layer at high temperatures due to its aromatic ring structure. This "char barrier" can effectively block oxygen and heat radiation. Even when the heat source temperature reaches 500°C, only a slight carbonization occurs on the material surface without causing structural collapse. This "ablation-resistant" property provides precious time for evacuating personnel.

Acoustic Environment of PI FOAM DUCT SHEET

PID DUCT BOARD

Traditional ducts often neglect noise control. However, PI foam, with its unique porous structure, has become the "invisible tuner" for improving the acoustic environment of buildings.

Broadband sound absorption characteristics: The noise of the duct system is mainly in the mid-low frequency range and has strong penetrating power. Research shows that the noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of PI foam can reach above 0.75, and its average sound absorption coefficient exceeds 0.6. This means that it not only can absorb wind noise but also can effectively suppress the vibration-induced noise radiated from the pipe wall. Without the need for additional installation of mufflers, it can reduce indoor noise by 5-8 decibels.

Flow channel acoustic optimization: The PI sheet can be directly used as the inner lining of the duct. Its rough surface can effectively disrupt the boundary layer airflow compared to the smooth surface of metal, thereby reducing the generation of vortex noise.

Comprehensive analysis of PI FOAM DUCT SHEET

Analysis Dimension Limitations of Conventional Materials Core Advantages of PI Foam Duct Sheet Quantified Data / Performance Metrics
System Lifecycle Cost Low unit price but complex installation; significant thermal degradation over time Lightweight design reduces structural support costs; thermal conductivity remains nearly stable over 20 years Density as low as 1.3-1.4 kg/m³; λ ≤ 0.022 W/mK at ambient temperature
Fire & Thermal Runaway Safety Dense smoke and release of toxic halides (e.g., HCI, HCN) during combustion Forms a dense charring barrier at high temperatures to block radiant heat; intrinsically flame-resistant without halogens Smoke density < 5; LOI > 44%; no molten drips; self-extinguishing
Acoustic Environment Control Requires additional silencers or external acoustic wraps Open-cell structure inherently absorbs airflow noise and dampens wall vibration, simplifying system design NRC up to 0.75; average sound absorption coefficient > 0.6
Extreme / Mission-Critical Conditions Performance deteriorates sharply under humidity, vacuum, or radiation Ultra-low outgassing; exceptional resistance to salt spray, UV, and gamma radiation without property loss TML < 1.0%, CVCM < 0.1%; serviceable from -200°C to +200°C; stable in high vacuum

PRE-INSULATED DUCT vs G.I. DUCTWORK

Metric

20mm PIR Pre - Insulated Duct
(with 0.08mm Alu. Foil, )

0.5mm G.I Duct + 30mm Rubber Plastic (40-90kg/m3)

Fire Safety

Compliant (Class 0/BS 476, AS 1530.3). Self-extinguishing PIR core, low toxic smoke, non-combustible alu foil.

G.I non-combustible;
rubber plastic fire-retardant but requires coating to meet strict codes.G.I

Thermal Insulation

Excellent.
λ=0.020 W/m·K, no thermal bridging. 20mm integrated structure ensures consistent insulation.

Fair.
λ=0.035 W/m·K, thermal bridging at G.I joints. 30mm insulation offset by metal conductivity.

Hygiene & Air Quality

Superior.
Non-porous alu foil, smooth inner surface, moisture-resistant PIR. Meets cleanroom/hospital standards.

Poor.
Porous rubber plastic traps dust/mold; G.I-insulation gaps breed pathogens.

Lightweight

1.4-1.5 kg/m².
Ultra-light, reduces structural load; ideal for retrofits/timber-framed buildings.

5.1–6.3 kg/m².
Heavy G.I base + bulk insulation; requires reinforced supports.

Energy Efficiency

Excellent.
20–30% lower HVAC energy consumption. Minimizes heat gain/loss in conditioned air.

Low.
20–30% higher energy loss due to inferior insulation and thermal bridging.

Ease of Construction

Easy.
Factory-prefabricated tongue-and-groove joints. No separate insulation step; 40–60% less labor time.

Complex.
Two-step on-site process: G.I duct fabrication + rubber plastic wrapping. Labor-intensive, prone to gaps.

Quiet Operation

Good.
PIR core absorbs 10–15 dB airflow noise; alu foil dampens vibration.

Fair.
Rubber plastic provides basic sound reduction, but G.I vibration and insulation gaps reduce efficiency.

Space Savings

Excellent.
20mm total thickness (all-in-one). Fits tight ceilings/retrofit cavities.

Poor.
30.5mm total thickness (0.5mm G.I + 30mm insulation). Bulky, requires larger installation space.

Environmental Friendliness

Balanced.
CFC/HCFC-free PIR, recyclable alu foil. 20–30-year lifespan; net carbon positive in 1–3 years.

Low.
Rubber plastic non-recyclable; 10–15-year lifespan. Frequent replacement increases waste; higher energy emissions.

Air Leakage

Superior.
≤2% air leakage (EN 1507, AS/NZS 3660.1). Airtight factory joints + alu foil vapor barrier.

Poor.
5–10% air leakage. On-site sealing gaps; separate vapor barrier required.

Performance comparison based on UNT Duct product data and standard system configurations. Actual performance may vary depending on system design, installation method and project conditions.
