Fire Rated HVAC Duct Board

 

Fire Rated PIR (Polyisocyanurate) HVAC Duct Board is a pre-insulated panel system used to construct air distribution ducts that combine thermal efficiency with a certified fire performance. It typically consists of a rigid PIR foam core bonded between two layers of aluminum foil or other facings. Its fire rating and overall performance make it an advanced alternative to traditional metal ductwork for many HVAC projects.

 

Fire Performance and Key Ratings:

The fire rating is the defining feature of this duct board, validated by independent testing standards.

Certified Fire Ratings: High-performance PIR duct panels can achieve a Class 0 fire rating under the BS 476 standard, or a B1 grade according to GB8624-2006. In the European standard (EN 13501-1), a classification of B-s1, d0 is attainable, indicating very limited contribution to fire spread and smoke production.

Combustion and Smoke Characteristics: Some PIR boards are formulated to produce minimal toxic smoke and do not release black toxic smoke when burning. For instance, a smoke toxicity rating of < 4.5 can be achieved under the British Naval Engineering Standard (NES 713).

Beyond its fire resistance, the board's construction provides a range of performance benefits:

 

Superior Thermal Insulation:

The PIR foam core is an exceptional insulator. It typically has a very low thermal conductivity of around 0.020 to 0.022 W/m·K, which contributes to high energy efficiency and stable air temperatures within the duct.

 

Lightweight and High Strength:

The sandwich construction results in a panel that is significantly lighter than traditional metal ducts while still offering high compressive and tensile strength, with figures like 202 KPa for compressive strength and 423 KPa for tensile strength commonly cited.

 

Operational Limits:

This material is designed for a specific operating temperature range. The maximum continuous working temperature for air within the duct is generally around +80°C, with some variants rated for extreme lows down to -265°C.
