The PIR (polyisocyanurate) foam duct system is a prefabricated insulated duct solution that has rapidly gained popularity in commercial, industrial, and high-end residential HVAC fields in recent years.
The most prominent feature of PIR materials is their extremely low thermal conductivity. According to third-party testing data, the thermal conductivity of this material at 10℃ can be as low as 0.02 W/m·K, and even in low-temperature conditions (-20℃), it can reach 0.020 W/m·K. Compared to traditional glass wool (about 0.035-0.040 W/m·K) or rock wool, the insulation performance of PIR has improved by 30% to 40%.
This means that with the same thickness of duct, PIR ducts can significantly reduce the energy loss of cold and hot air during the transportation process. For long-term operating central air conditioning systems, this low thermal conductivity can directly translate into significant electricity cost savings. Typically, it can reduce the heat load loss of the air conditioning system by more than 20%, with a shorter payback period.
Fire Safety of PIR Foam HVAC Ductwork
Safety is the primary red line for the selection of HVAC materials. PIR foam is a thermosetting material, and its molecular structure determines that it will not melt and drip when exposed to fire, but instead quickly forms a dense carbonized layer. This layer structure can effectively prevent the spread of flames.
During actual testing, PIR duct panels usually meet the BS 476 Class 0 or EU EN 13501-1 B-s1,d0 standards. Their oxygen index is generally higher than 33%, belonging to the category of non-flammable materials.
In contrast, traditional polyurethane (PU) foam is more prone to decomposition at high temperatures. The fire resistance of PIR is significantly better than that of PU, providing a more reliable fire safety guarantee for densely populated places such as hospitals, schools, and shopping malls.

Structural Strength and Lightweight of PIR Foam HVAC Ductwork

The PIR duct panel has an extremely high compressive strength. Data shows that its compressive strength can reach over 202 KPa when deformed by 10%. This indicates that the finished ducts have excellent resistance to compression and bending, and can withstand large wind pressures without deformation, making them suitable for high-speed air supply systems with wind speeds up to 13-20 m/s.
At the same time, its surface density is extremely low, with a weight typically ranging from 1.3 to 1.4 kilograms per square meter, which is only one-sixth of that of traditional galvanized iron sheet ducts (approximately 8.3 kg/m²). This lightweight and high-strength characteristic significantly reduces the load-bearing burden of the building structure.
Additionally, due to its pre-insulation feature, the traditional process of wrapping insulation cotton and moisture-proof layers around the ducts is omitted, resulting in an installation efficiency increase of over 40% and saving in ceiling space.
Environmental Attributes and Life Cycle of PIR Foam HVAC Ductwork
From an environmental perspective, the modern PIR foaming process does not contain CFC (chlorofluorocarbons) and HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbons), and has no adverse effect on the ozone layer. The product also complies with the RoHS environmental directive requirements. More importantly, the long-term insulation performance means that the carbon emissions of the system are significantly reduced throughout its life cycle.
Although the initial material cost of PIR ducts is slightly higher than that of low-end insulation materials, it has extremely low maintenance costs, zero condensation leading to ceiling repair expenses, and significant electricity cost savings.
