What is PIR Foam Composite Air Duct?

PIR Foam Composite Air Duct are essential high-performance elements for modern HVAC systems. Built with an aluminum foil–PIR foam sandwich, they replace traditional galvanized steel ducts with on-site insulation. Suitable for hotels, offices, airports, hospitals, and other commercial and public buildings.

At its core, a PIR Foam Composite Air Duct is a sandwich-style composite made of three key layers:

Core Layer: The core substrate consists of rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam, a closed-cell polymeric foam material characterized by superior thermal insulation performance and stable thermal resistance, which serves as the primary thermal barrier of the integrated panel.

Facing Layers: Robust protective facings are structurally bonded to both surfaces of the PIR core via factory lamination technology. Two predominant facing materials are adopted for differentiated engineering applications:

1. Aluminum facing: This material features low weight, excellent moisture impermeability, and prominent thermal reflectivity, which effectively optimizes the overall energy-saving performance of the panel system.

2. Galvanized steel facing (for heavy-duty scenarios): Possessing enhanced mechanical strength and structural durability, this facing is specially engineered to withstand rigorous service conditions that require superior load-bearing and impact resistance.

Benefiting from the integrated factory bonding process, the composite structure forms a monolithic, prefabricated panel that is ready for direct installation. This structural design eliminates the conventional demand for separate metal ductwork and loose insulating materials such as fiberglass batts, thereby simplifying construction procedures and improving on-site installation efficiency.

Service Life, Environmental Protection and Hygiene of  PIR Foam Composite Air Duct

Durability Performance Indicators

Benefiting from the stable cyclic macromolecular structure of PIR foam, its thermal conductivity variation is controlled within a maximum increase of 5% across 25 years, with a rated service life of 20–25 years. By contrast, galvanized steel ducts develop corrosion and air leakage after 5–8 years, and rock wool will pulverise and lose its insulating function within 5 years. The overall life-cycle replacement cost can be lowered by 70%.

Environmental Test Outcomes No harmful substances such as formaldehyde or benzene are released, and asbestos is absent from the formulation. The material loss rate during foaming production stands at only 3%, and residual scraps are recyclable for secondary manufacturing. The product meets requirements to gain bonus credits for LEED certification and China Three-Star Green Building Evaluation.

Cleanliness Characteristics The smooth antibacterial aluminium foil cladding on both sides reduces internal air flow resistance by 12% and inhibits dust accumulation and mould growth. It is applicable to purified ventilation systems for food factories and surgical operating rooms. Extra antibacterial inner lining coating is unnecessary, resulting in zero additional consumable costs for clean system construction.

The "lightweight revolution" of PIR Foam Composite Air Duct

Class 0 Ductwork

In the HVAC sector, the PAL prefabricated insulated duct system transcends a single product category. It delivers a revolutionary construction mindset, shifting the workflow from field fabrication to modular assembly. Constructed with PIR (polyisocyanurate) or phenolic foam core and dual-side aluminium foil cladding, the system distinguishes itself from traditional galvanized steel ductwork in material characteristics and construction logic.

Conventional duct projects demand separate shipment of galvanized steel panels, rock wool/fiberglass insulation, adhesives and auxiliary components. Such materials are bulky and susceptible to abrasion and damage.

PIR Foam Composite Air Duct achieve a density of roughly 50 kg/m³, and completed ducts weigh only 15% of comparable galvanized steel alternatives.

Economically for logistics, unit-area transport costs are reduced, while the space required for on-site material storage decreases by over 60%.
