Fire Safety of PIR Foam HVAC Air Duct of PIR Foam HVAC Air Duct

PIR is a modified type of polyurethane. An isocyanurate ring is introduced into its molecular structure, raising the thermal decomposition temperature to approximately 300℃, which is much higher than that of ordinary polyurethane (about 180℃).
The oxygen index is usually ≥ 26%, meeting the B1-level flame-retardant standard (as per GB 8624). Some formulations can also meet BS 476 Part 7 Class 1 or DIN 4102 B2.
During combustion, it produces a low amount of smoke, and a dense carbonized layer forms rapidly on the surface, preventing the flame from spreading inward. At the same time, the toxic gases such as hydrogen cyanide released in the smoke are much lower than those in traditional PU.
Compared to the method of applying rubber insulation on the outside of iron pipe ducts (which is prone to combustion and requires the addition of fireproof isolation strips), PIR ducts inherently possess fire resistance and significantly reduce the risk of chimney effect during a fire.
Mechanical Structure and Installation Convenience of PIR Foam HVAC Air Duct
Lightweight advantage: The weight per square meter is only 1/5 to 1/4 of that of iron sheet ducts (approximately 2.5 to 4.5 kg/m²), reducing the load on the building structure. It is also convenient for high-altitude hoisting and can be operated by a single person.
Prefabrication and connection method: The factory cuts into standard straight pipes, elbows, and tees according to the drawings. On-site, the connection uses socket-joint female and male ports, aluminum alloy flanges, or sealed with pressure-sensitive adhesive tape. The connection efficiency is improved by approximately 50% compared to iron sheet biting + riveting, and there is no need for hot work operations, eliminating potential fire hazards on site.
Flexible cutting processing: It can be cut using a regular utility knife or an electric heating wire. The edges are smooth and flat, suitable for irregular components. However, for metal ducts, special cutting machines and edge-biting machines are required, which involve a large investment in equipment.

Aerodynamics and Noise Control of PIR Foam HVAC Air Duct

The inner wall is made of aluminum foil or antibacterial coating. The surface roughness is absolutely ≤ 0.2 mm, which is much lower than that of galvanized sheet (0.5 - 0.8 mm) and composite glass fiber board (rough and porous). The friction resistance coefficient is small. Under the same air volume, it can reduce the pressure drop by approximately 15% - 20% compared to iron sheet ducts. It is possible to select a smaller power fan, thus saving operating electricity costs.
The closed-cell foam core material itself possesses excellent sound absorption and vibration reduction properties. The insertion loss for mid-to-high frequency airflow noise (such as fan vortex and turbulence) can reach 15 to 25 dB/m. Without the need for additional noise eliminators, it can meet the quiet requirements of offices, hospitals, and other quiet environments. In contrast, iron sheet ducts need to be externally covered with damping felt or internally lined with sound-absorbing cotton, which increases costs and complicates the construction process.
